Oral Pathology
Detecting and Managing Oral Disease

At Westshore OMS Specialists, our doctors routinely check for signs of oral cancer during oral pathology consultations. In addition to a thorough check up, we recommend you perform monthly self-examinations of the mouth to eliminate all possibility of oral cancer. Your oral health is our top priority, and early detection can tremendously reduce complications, risks, and the need for a more invasive procedure in the future.

What is oral pathology?

Oral pathology is simply the process of identifying, assessing, and treating diseases in the mouth. Dr. Contino, Dr. Reed or Dr. Winokur ensure optimal care by accurately detecting and managing suspicious oral changes. A comprehensive consultation by our highly knowledgeable and caring surgeons will put your fears to rest, as they discuss with you immediate, appropriate, and effective care and treatment options.

What should I be looking for during my self-examinations?

No one has better access to and knowledge of your mouth than you do, so we encourage you to regularly perform monthly self-examinations, taking into consideration even the slightest changes. Signs of disease to look for include:

  • A persistent sore that doesn’t heal
  • A new growth or lump
  • Thickening of the skin or lining of the cheek
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or mouth lining
  • Difficult or painful chewing
  • Continual pain
  • Numbness of the tongue
  • Jaw swelling

If any of these symptoms last more than a few days, call us to schedule an examination. As with any cancer, the sooner it is diagnosed, the more effective the impending treatment will be.

Is oral cancer treatable?

Yes, best outcomes result when oral cancer is detected at an early stage, before the cancer cells have spread to other areas of the body. Recent advances in reconstructive surgery not only provide numerous surgical techniques for removing tumors but also procedures that restore appearances, leaving little to no sign of change. Drs. Contino, Reed or Winokur will work closely with you to ensure that your treatment is suitable for your health and well-being.

If you detect any change in your mouth, such as lumps or sores that fail to heal quickly, please call us today. Drs. Contino, Reed or Winokur are prepared to perform biopsies that would inform further action.
